Charles David Grant ’65

Charles GrantCharles David Grant, age 73 of Canton, passed away on Monday, June 12, 2017 at Halcyon Hospice in Atlanta, GA.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, July 8th at 2:00p.m. in the Sanctuary of Canton First United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim McRae and Rev. Sandra Henry officiating. Interment with Army Military Honors will be held at 2:30PM Friday October 6, 2017 in the Georgia National Cemetery.

David graduated from North Druid Hills High School in 1961 then attended Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina and graduated with a BS in Mathematics then received his Masters degree at the University of Georgia.

Captain David Grant served at N.O.R.A.D.(North American Aerospace Defense Command) being the only U.S. Army officer to serve at that Air Force Installation at that time. After his military service he was a Mathematics Instructor at Dekalb College. He retired in 1979 to pursue his Actuarial career.

David was deeply involved with the Boy Scouts of America from 1990 until the time of his death. The classes he accomplished were Fast Start, Youth Protection, SLT, Wood Badge and BSA Lifeguard. He worked with the Summer Camps: 1993 Daniel Boone, 1994 Woodruff; 1995 Woodruff; 1996 Woodruff (acting Scoutmaster); 1998 Daniel Boone. He Loved High Adventure: 1997 Sea Base (Trip Leader); 1998 Post Philmont; 1999 Northern Tier.

Awards: Scouter Training Award. The District Level Activities were Scoutmastership Fundamentals Staff, Spring, 1998 Dekalb; Fall, 1998 Dekalb; Spring, 1999 Hightower Trail. Camporee Staff: Spring 1997 Highland Games; Spring, 1998 Air & Space; Fall, 1998, Sportsfest. District Committee- Hightower Trail, Boy Scout Training Chair July, 1998 – 2012. District Award of Merit (Dekalb) Spring, 1998. His Council Level Activities were the Allatoona Aquatics Base Staff Swimming and Lifesaving 1996- present, BSA Lifeguard Counselor, BSA Aquatics Instructor Spring, 1998 Camp School- Camp School – Camp Comer, AL, Visitation Team Camp Buck Toms Spring, 1997.

David was an Actuary, Employee Benefit Consultant- Towers Perrin
Atlanta Actuarial Club- Society of Actuaries; Enrolled Actuary- Member of the American Academy of Actuaries and the Atlanta Jaycees.

He was a Sunday School Teacher/ fourth grade boys, chair Finance Committee at Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church. David was active in the Southern Regional National Camp School for the past 13 years.

He was President of the Clan Grant Society of the United States, He was also a former President of ST. Andrews Society in Atlanta, GA and a former President of the Burns Club of Atlanta, GA.

He is survived by: Wife – Jane Stalcup Grant of Canton, GA, Son – Patrick Grant and Tara Strobach of Atlanta, GA, Daughter – Katherine and Todd Boyce of Decatur, GA, Sister – Anne and Jim Rambo of Conyers, GA, Grandchild – Elizabeth McKinnon Boyce.
