Board of Visitors Member R. Franklin Davis

Frank Davis, 70, of Concord, North Carolina died August 24, 2015 after a short illness.

He is survived by his wife, Joan, son Dave of Concord, NC, daughter Kyle Cochran and husband, Tony, two grandchildren, Ryan and Lindsey of Smithfield, Virginia, his brother Malcolm, wife Judy, and their son Mitchell Davis and wife Kelly of Atlanta, Georgia.

Immediately after college, Frank taught high school English in a nation-wide linguistic research and development project in Rome, GA.

He spent the next three decades as an admissions and chief development officer in higher education, at his alma mater, Berry College, as well as at Brevard College, the University of Alabama at Huntsville, Mercer University, and Wingate University.

He joined The Cannon Foundation in late 1998 and became its Executive Director in 2000. Under his leadership, the Foundation continued to expand its grant making across the state of North Carolina.

Active in professional associations, he served as chair of the Southeastern Council of Foundations Legislative Relations Committee, the Forum of the Regional Grant Makers National Accountability Task Force and was a multi-term board member and officer of the North Carolina Network of Grantmakers.

He was a member of the Davidson College Board of Visitors and served on the Parents Council at East Carolina University.

He was also a Past President of the Donors Forum in Charlotte and was a member of the Trustee Council of CMC-Union Medical Center. He received an honorary PhD from Wingate University in 2013.

Final arrangements are incomplete at this time. Wilkinson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
