Clarence Lee Smith ’50

Clarence Lee Smith, 89, life time resident of Mooresville, died unexpectedly at 11:00 am on December 19, 2014. He was born in Mooresville on September 1, 1925, the son of the late Floyd Brem and Julia Overcash Smith. He graduated from Mooresville High School and, in 1950, from Davidson College.

A life-long member of St. Mark’;s Lutheran Church, Clarence was church organist for many years. He enjoyed watching the construction of the present church facility. One of his favorite church activities was decorating the church at Christmas.

During World War II he served first in the Navy as a medic and then was transferred to the Marine Corps as a corpsman. The war ended just as he was being sent to Guam, where he served many months in a hospital. For some years after graduating from Davidson College, Clarence was office manager of Mooresville Telephone Company. For the last twenty years before retiring, he owned and operated Wise Florist in downtown Mooresville.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his brothers, Brem, Albert and Harry Smith. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Martha Lippard Smith; sons, Jack and his wife Margaret, of Charlotte, and Tim and his wife Amy, of Mooresville; five grandchildren, Alex, Emmalee, Chris, Tanner and Landis; sister, Laura Little, sister-in-law, Frances Shoe, both of Mooresville and a number of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 am on Monday, December 22, at St. Mark’;s Lutheran Church. The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 21, at the St. Mark’;s Family Life Center from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the music fund of St. Mark’;s Lutheran Church, 454 Fieldstone Road, Mooresville, NC 28115. Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, Mooresville, is serving the family of Mr. Smith.
