Cecil Kenneth Brown, Jr. '54Cecil Kenneth Brown, Jr. Born in Mecklenburg County, NC to Cecil Kenneth Brown, Sr. and Evelyn Hill Brown, he was the oldest of four children. He attended Woodberry Forest School graduating in 1950. He went on to attend Davidson College in Davidson, NC acquiring a BA in Economics.

 

He participated in the ROTC graduating as a 2nd lieutenant serving in the US Army. It was during that time that he met his wife of 57 years, Myrna Ames Brown. They were married on June 20, 1955. He then enrolled in UNC Law School in 1956. After graduating from law school in 1959, he began practicing law in Raleigh. He served as president of the Wake Country Bar Association. He was a deacon and elder at Trinity Presbyterian Church where he was a charter member.

 

He was an ardent alumni and giver to Woodberry Forest School, Davidson College and UNC. He was known by family and friends at Ken and in the law community as CK. He enjoyed history and had a passion for the Civil War and World War II. He also enjoyed traveling with his family.

 

He is predeceased by his wife, Myrna Ames Brown, and his daughter, Katherine Brown Bathurst. He is survived by his two daughters, Carolyn Brown Stewart of New Bern and Laura Brown DiGirolamo of Raleigh. He was blessed with 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

 

A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 1st at 11am at Trinity Presbyterian Church located 3120 New Hope Road in Raleigh, NC.

Henry Maynard Bellamy, Jr. ’54

Henry Maynard Bellamy, Jr. '54Col. Henry Maynard Bellamy, Jr., MD, 81, of Clemmons, passed away September 18, 2014, at his home. Henry was born on January 2, 1933 a son, to the late Henry Maynard Bellamy, Sr. and the late Ula Hurst Cluverius Bellamy. He was a man of faith. Henry attended Davidson College and Medical College of Virginia, after joining the US Air Force.

He retired from the Air Force after 20 years of service, during his time in the service he was Hospital Commander at Wurtsmith Air Force Base, Chief of Aerospace Medicine at Okinawa and Stewart Air Force Base, and Chief, Clinical Medicine / Surgeons office at Strategic Air Command Headquarters. Following his military career he continued his medical profession as a Gastroenterologist for ten years. Henry then decided to serve the Veterans and ended his career as Chief of Staff at W.G. (Bill) Hefner VA Medical Center, Salisbury, NC;where Col. Bellamy was instrumental in the affiliation with W.G. (Bill) Hefner VA Medical Center, Salisbury, NC and Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, developing a working relationship. Henry also enjoyed hunting, fishing, wood working, painting, gardening, reading, arts and symphony. He loved his family and was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. Henry was a quiet man with strong convictions.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Nancy Wagstaff Bellamy of the home;preceded in death by his daughter, Joan Ellington Bellamy, survived by grandson, Christopher Bellamy of Angier, NC, and great granddaughter Olivia;son, Dr. Henry Maynard Bellamy, III and wife, Deena of Christianburg, VA, grandson, Wesley Bellamy and Leahayne of Radford, VA, and great granddaughter, Kylie, granddaughter, Jessica Cobb and husband, Iain of Arlington, VA, grandson, William Bellamy, of Christian-burg, VA;daughter, Mary Kathryn Skinner of Ocean Springs, MS, grandsons, Aaron Skinner and Preston Skinner of Ocean Springs, MS;son, Ian Hurst Bellamy and Lisa of Glassport, PA, grandchildren, Arianah, Brianah and Elliot. Henry was preceded in death by his first wife and the mother of Joan, Henry and Mary, Vivian Macon Pleasant;survived by the mother of his son Ian, Joan Koon Bellamy of Glassport, PA.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 22nd at Bethlehem United Methodist Church with Pastor, Barry Lemons officiating. Burial will follow with full military honors at Salisbury National Cemetery in Salisbury, NC at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends Sunday, September 21st from 6:00 until 8:00p.m. at Frank Vogler and Sons Funeral Home Clemmons Chapel.

Alston Wilcox Blount, Jr. ’54

Alston Wilcox Blount, Jr. '54BLOUNT, Alston Wilcox Jr., M.D., died peacefully with his family by his side on September 9, 2014 in Richmond, Va., at the age of 81.

Dr. Blount is survived by his wife, Nancy Hughes Blount; five children, Alston W. Blount III of Boyds, Md., Margaret A. Blount of Richmond, Va., Michael A. Blount of Richmond, Va., Elizabeth N. Clifford of Tampa, Fla., Jennifer L. Blount of Richmond, Va.; and six grandchildren, Colin and Tatyana Blount, Adam Maxwell, Emily Clifford, William and Stuart Rowan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alston W. Blount Sr. and Annie Lee Funk Blount of Wilmington, N.C.

Dr. Blount was born on February 12, 1933 in Charleston, S.C. He graduated from Davidson College in 1954 and received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1958. Dr. Blount served his country as a Captain in the United States Air Force from 1962 to 1964 and upon receiving an Honorable Discharge, moved to Richmond, Va

He began his professional career as a staff cardiologist at the McGuire Veterans Medical Center and was promoted to chief of cardiology in 1965. His interest in cardiac medicine took him to MCV Hospital in 1966, where he served both on the teaching faculty and as the director of the Coronary ICU. In 1972, Dr. Blount formed Medical Specialist Inc., a multidisciplinary private practice, in collaboration with several colleagues to better serve the needs of the patient community.

Dr. Blount retired from Medical Specialists, Inc. in 1998 and worked for Cardiovascular Associates of Virginia until 2001 and part-time for the Social Security Administration until his full retirement in 2006. Dr. Blount was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease and named a fellow of both the American College of Physicians and American College of Cardiology. His professional appointments included president of the Medical Staff and a member of the Board of Directors at Retreat Hospital; chief of Internal Medicine at St. Mary’s Hospital and a member of the Board of Directors of the Richmond Academy of Medicine.

Throughout his life, Dr. Blount enjoyed a fulfilling personal life in the company of his wife of 56 years, two sons, three daughters, six grandchildren and many friends and colleagues. He was an active member of the Rotary Club of West Richmond and spent much of his free time pursuing his interests in gardening, woodworking, music, sailing and travel. Dr. Blount touched countless people throughout his life and will be remembered as an accomplished and dedicated physician, a passionate educator to many aspiring physicians and a loving husband, father and grandfather.

The family will receive visitors Friday evening, September 12, 2014 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Woody’s Funeral Home Huguenot Chapel, 1020 Huguenot Rd., Midlothian, Va. 23113. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday morning, September 13, 2014 at the Hollywood Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel.

Angus Benjamin "Buddy" Hagins, Sr. '54
Angus Benjamin “Buddy” Hagins, Sr., 81, of Lancaster, passed away Monday, July 7, 2014. He was born December 12, 1932 in Lancaster, a son of the late Angus Wallace Hagins and Marian Victoria McCants Hagins. Mr. Hagins was married to the late Barbara Marilyn Mealing “Bobbie” Hagins for over 50 years.

He was a graduate of Lancaster High School and Davidson College. Upon graduating from college, he proudly served our country in the U.S. Army. Mr. Hagins worked at Porter Belk Lumber Company for over 35 years. In his retirement years he helped his wife with all her charitable work and was an avid photographer.

A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Hagins will be held Thursday, July 10, 2014 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles Phillips officiating. Burial will be in the Lancaster Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Thursday, July 10, 2014 at First United Methodist Church.

Mr. Hagins is survived by a son, Angus Benjamin “Ben” Hagins, Jr. of Lancaster. In addition to his wife and his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lawrence Ellison “Sonny” Hagins and a sister, Junell Hagins “Judy” Paul.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Thursday, July 10, 2014 at First United Methodist Church.

Boyd B. Massagee, Jr. ’54

Boyd B. Massagee, Jr., 81, of Hendersonville died Thursday, March 13, 2014 at the Elizabeth House after a period of declining health. He was born in Greenville, NC on September 25, 1932 to the late Boyd B. and Margaret Hough Massagee, Sr.

Prior to beginning school, Boyd’s father, whose career was in banking and finance, was transferred to Hendersonville to the State Trust Company. After graduating from Hendersonville High School in 1950, Boyd enrolled in Davidson College and graduated in1954 with a degree in Economics. He then enlisted in the United States Army, and was on active duty for two years. Upon completion of his military service, he continued to serve his country in the North Carolina National Guard, attaining the rank of Captain. Upon the completion of his active military duty, he immediately enrolled in the University of North Carolina Law School. While in school he served on the Board of Editors of the University of North Carolina Law Review. He graduated from law school in 1959 with a minor in “Tarheel” school spirit.

He returned to Hendersonville and joined the prestigious law firm of Prince, Jackson, and Youngblood in 1959. Although he was considered a general practitioner, he was quite fond of litigation and was very comfortable in the courtroom at a very early age. He loved the English language, and immensely enjoyed retrieving words from his extended vocabulary. He was a member of numerous associations including the Henderson County Bar Association, the North Carolina Bar Association as well as the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers. In February 2014, he was inducted into the North Carolina Bar Association Hall of Fame which is one of the highest honors bestowed on a North Carolina attorney.

He felt strongly about the importance of education, and served as the Chairman of the Hendersonville City School Board for numerous years. He was instrumental in the successful merger of the Hendersonville City and County school systems in the early 1990’s. Although he never fully retired, he enjoyed traveling and found solace in his vacation home in Charleston, S.C. and the company of his dear friend, Ron Blanchard.

He is survived by one son, Boyd “Buddy” B. Massagee, III and his wife, Sally of Hendersonville; two daughters: Mary Louise Massagee of Washington, D,C., and Charlotte Anne Massagee of Libya, five grandchildren: Sarah R. Massagee, and Kelly J. Massagee both of Charleston, S.C.; Rachel M. Brackett, Lucy K. Massagee and Tyrean K. Massagee all of Hendersonville. Seven great-grandchildren: Alana R. Jackson, Elliott M. Jackson, Myles Brackett, Colin B. Brackett, Abraham R. Jones, Keellen D. Smith and Kahn’yae D. McGrady.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at St. John In- The-Wilderness Episcopal Church, of which he was a member, with The Rev. John A. Morton officiating.
