Robert Barringer ’62

Dr. Robert Phillips Barringer, 78, died November 29, 2018 in Raleigh, NC. Dr. Barringer was a native of Newton, NC. He was born May 15, 1940 to Dr. Marshall Robert Barringer and Mildred Phillips Barringer.

Dr. Barringer was a graduate of Davidson College, Davidson N.C. and the Medical University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served his Internship at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, Lexington Kentucky. He completed his Residency in Internal Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston S.C.

Dr. Barringer served his country as a Captain in the United States Army, including a tour in Vietnam. He was awarded 2 Bronze Stars for his service in Vietnam. He moved to Gastonia in 1973, joining the medical practice of the Gaston Internal Medicine Clinic.
He served as a Partner until his retirement in 1996.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Gastonia and was a member of the Men’s Henderlite Bible Class. He was also an enthusiastic volunteer for S.O.C.K.S.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife Joan Hollingsworth Barringer, a son Donald Martin Barringer, and a daughter Ann Phillips Barringer both of Raleigh. A brother Donald Miller Barringer and wife Tina of Gastonia, niece Pamela Barringer Davis and husband David of Clemmons NC, niece Kimberly Barringer Witherell and husband Timothy of Gastonia. A Brother-in-Law Dr. Albert Stephens Hollingsworth, Jr. and wife Dianne of Anderson SC, a niece Ruth Hollingsworth Martin and husband Rodney of Calhoun Falls, SC, a nephew Dr. John Zeigler Hollingsworth and wife Holly of Pfafftown, NC

In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to The First Presbyterian Church, 1621 E. Garrison Blvd. Gastonia, NC 28054 or to S.O.C.K.S. 160 Woodlawn Avenue, Belmont, NC 28012

The family will receive friends on Saturday December 8 from 2:30 until 4:30 in the Fellowship Hall of the First Presbyterian Church in Gastonia, NC. A private service of committal will be held for the family in the Columbarium of the church.
