Pres Nowlin, Jr. ’62

Preston Nowlin, Jr. , 82, passed away at home in Harrisonburg on August 17, 2018. Born April 27, 1936 in Charlotte, NC, Pres graduated from Davidson College, served in the United States Navy, and began his career at Dupont in 1961. He was called to the ministry in 1968 and attended Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, where he was awarded a Masters of Divinity in 1971.

Pres was the faithful shepherd to many Virginia congregations during his ministry, and retired from Powhatan Mennonite Church in 1998.

Pres was predeceased by his parents Dr. G. Preston and Mary Jones Nowlin of Charlotte, North Carolina, and his brother John Burton Nowlin.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carolyn Mason Nowlin; son Pres, his wife Judy and their sons Preston, Rob and Clay; daughter Mary, her husband Eric Bendfeldt and their children John Freeman, Hannah, and Amanda; and son Charles, his wife Lisa and their children Sam, Joy and Sara. He is also survived by his brother Bob of Charlotte, NC.

The family expresses their profound gratitude to First Choice Home Care and Hospice and to the staff at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Good Samaritan Fund at the VMRC Foundation, 1501 Virginia Avenue, Harrisonburg, Virginia, 22802; or to Mennonite Central Committee, 21 South 12th Street, Akron, Pennsylvania, 17501.

A memorial service will be held at 11 AM, August 25, in Detwiler Auditorium, VMRC, 1501 Virginia Avenue, Harrisonburg, Virginia. Interment will be at a later date in Powhatan, Virginia.
