John Manson Webb Crute, Jr. ’61

John Manson Webb Crute, Jr., 79, of Raleigh, NC died peacefully Monday February 5 at his home. Mr. Crute was born January 20, 1939 in Wilson NC, a son of John Manson Webb Crute and Kathryn Fulghum Crute.

He is preceded in death by his son, John Manson Webb Crute III, his parents and a sister, Ann Lancaster King.

Surviving are his three daughters; Mary Crute Crumpler (Burks) Raleigh, NC, Adair Phifer Crute, LaJolla CA, Nancy Holcombe Crute Del Mar, CA.

He is also survived by three grandsons: Edward Phifer Hutchison, Edward Burks Crumpler and Webb Crute Crumpler. He is also survived by his brother, Edwin Fulghum Crute (Jackie) of Beulaville, NC.

Mr. Crute graduated from Davidson College with the class of 1961 and spent the next two years at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio Texas serving as a lieutenant in the US Army. On his return to NC he began his brokerage career at Merrill Lynch in Raleigh and worked as a stock broker in Raleigh for the next 27 years.

After retirement Mr. Crute traveled across the US and eventually settled in Texas. In 2016 he returned to Raleigh.

“Johnny’s” colorful personality will long be remembered and missed by those who knew him.

A private service will be held in Wilson at a later date.
