Dennis Dewitt Nicholson ’67

Dennis Dewitt Nicholson III, 71, passed away unexpectedly Sunday evening, October 1, 2017 in Asheville, NC with his brother, Don at his side.

His funeral service will be held Friday, October 6, 2017 in J. HENRY STUHR, INC. DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, 232 Calhoun Street at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery following the service. The family will receive friends Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the Downtown Chapel.

Dennis was born November 21, 1945, in Birmingham, Alabama, son of the late Colonel D.D. Nicholson, Jr. and Celeste Peeples Nicholson. He graduated Rivers High School ’63, Davidson College ’67 and the University of South Carolina ’70.

He was a residential home builder for many years in Charleston and most recently in Asheville, NC.

Dennis loved his family, college basketball, the Lowcountry and surf-fishing on Seabrook Island. He was an adventurous traveler, enjoyed a knowledge of words, lively conversation and heated debates.

He will be missed by many. Dennis is survived by his son, Dennis Dewitt “Witt” Nicholson IV of New York City, NY; sister, Judy Frey (Keith) of Westport, CT; two brothers: David Nicholson (Martha) of Lewisburg, PA and Donald Nicholson (Christina) of Asheville, NC; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by his former wife, Melinda Nicholson of Charleston, SC.

Memorials may be made to the Col. D.D. Nicholson, Jr. Scholarship Fund at The Citadel, 171 Moultrie Street, Charleston, SC 29409.
