It is with sadness that Davidson announces the death of Joretta “Jo” Archie, a long time executive assistant to the Dean of Students and Davidson employee from 1962 – 1996.
Joretta “Jo” Levan Archie, 83, of Mooresville, passed away on Monday, August 10, 2015 at Genesis Eldercare in Mooresville.
Jo was born on October 15, 1931 in Cramerton, NC, to the late Lester Leroy Levan and Rosa Arney Levan Shumake. Mrs. Archie was employed at Davidson College from 1962 – 1996, where she retired after serving as Executive Secretary of the Dean from 1973-1996. J
o was a member of Fieldstone Presbyterian Church in Mooresville. She was a Master Gardener and member of the NC Cooperative Extension Service, Lucky Stars Line Dance Team, and the Mooresville Chapter AARP, where she served as the immediate past Secretary.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Otis Levan and Dwight Shumake.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Robert “Bill” Clifton Archie; children, Sherry Archie Strunk and her husband, Whitley, Robert Clifton Archie, Jr. and his wife, Sherry, Jeffrey Scott Archie; sisters, Margie Meadows, Jackie McKnight; brother, Melvin Shumake; she was lovingly known as Jo Jo by her four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, August 13 at Heritage House of Cavin-Cook Funeral Home with Rev. John Millholland officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
