Elmer Lee Chaney ’56

Elmer Lee Chaney ’56 passed away Sunday morning, March 4, 2012. A funeral service was held Wednesday, March 7, at All Saints Episcopal Church, 525 Lake Concord Rd., Concord, where Lee and Mary were members. The family received friends at the church. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Born April 6, 1934 in Charlotte, he was the son of the late Elmer and Moselle Chaney. Lee graduated from Concord High School in 1952 and from Elon University in 1956 with a degree in education. He received his Master’s in Psychology from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Lee was Professor of Psychology at Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, Ala. for over 40 years. Lee had a great passion for music and was a collector of keyed musical instruments some dating as far as the 1830’s is nothing if not a study of past human life and culture by the recovery of remaining materials. Lee maintained an anecdote or a detailed history for each of his instruments four of which will be designated to the Smithsonian Institute one day. While living in Alabama he gave many organ concerts throughout the South. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary McCants Chaney, and his sister, Ann Chaney Brewer. Lee is survived by his son, John Chaney of Greer, S.C.; his sister, Susan Chaney Love of Concord; numerous nephews; and one cousin.
