Samuel L. White ’63

Samuel Landis White died Oct. 27, 2022 after a lifetime of service to his community, his church and his family. He was born to Stephen A. White V and Mary Landis White on February 20, 1941, and was a lifelong resident of Mebane.

He was devoted to Mebane, serving as a Town Board member, following a tradition that began in 1882 when his great-great grandfather was the town’s first mayor. Sam was the last member of the White family to serve as President of White Furniture Company before the business was sold.

He attended Mebane High School where he led the team to the finals of the state football championship in 1957. He was an Eagle Scout and a proud graduate of Davidson College in 1963. He received a master’s degree in business from the University of Virginia in 1965.

After returning to Mebane, he married his childhood sweetheart, Margaret “Peggy” Gibson White, and they raised five children who survive him: Grace Ellen White, Samuel Glasgow White (Jessica), David Stanton White (Lydia), Rebecca Gibson White (Skip), and Julia White Buckner (Joe), and his 12 grandchildren: Peter, Charlie, Nell, Jeff, Emily, Collin, Zane, Katherine, Leo, Eva, Natalie and Elijah.

Sam was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Ellen White Turner; his brother, Stephen Alexander “Zan” White VI; and his stepmother, Margaret Holmes White.

He leaves behind a congregation of beloved friends at Grace Reformed Baptist Church who worshiped with him and ministered to him throughout his decades of faithful service to God.

A Memorial service will be held at Grace Reformed Baptist Church at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1. In lieu of flowers the family asks for contributions to Grace Reformed or a charity of your choosing.
