John Burton Cameron, Jr. ’63

John Burton Cameron, Jr. 81, of Norfolk, died September 10, 2022 in his home. After growing up in Broadway, North Carolina he graduated from Davidson College and obtained his PhD in French History from the University of North Carolina. While serving in the Army he was an instructor at the John F Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School at Fort Bragg.

John, a traveler at heart, lived in numerous places including Louisiana, France, NYC, and Pennsylvania before retiring in Hampton Roads. Since coming to Norfolk, he became a beloved member of the community being especially involved in the Muse Writers Center and the Norfolk Rotary Club as well as other organizations. He recently wrote and published three historical novels as well as a book on history.

He is pre-deceased by his parents John B. Cameron Sr. and Geneva Harrington Cameron as well as his son Josiah Cameron. Survivors include his spouse Abby Van Voorhees, children Burton and Asa Cameron, Sarah, Molly and David Chodakewitz, grandchildren Allen, Marguerite and Julia Cameron and brother Harold Cameron.

A funeral service will be held at John and Abby’s home at 1:00p.m. Friday September 16, 2022 with a 3:00p.m. graveside service at Forest Lawn Cemetery. A reception at the home will follow the graveside. The family will greet friends one hour prior to services from 12:00 until 1:00p.m.
