Stuart A. “Stu” Plummer ’53

It is with great sadness that the family of Stuart A. Plummer announce his passing on December 15, 2021 in Jackson, WY.

Stu graduated from Davidson College, Davidson, NC and received a doctorate in theological studies from Princeton University. He instituted a Dept. of Pastoral Care and Education at Presbyterian Medical Center in Denver, CO in 1960, where he served in multiple leadership roles and as a Clinical Pastoral Education Supervisor to CPE students. He also earned a Diploma of Applied Psychoanalysis from the Denver Institute for Psychoanalysis, and had a private practice of psychotherapy after retiring from Presbyterian Medical Center.

Stu was very active in the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) and had served in Regional Director and Interim Executive Directive roles. He was awarded the ACPE 2001 Distinguished Service Award for his contributions and leadership as an ACPE Supervisor. Throughout his professional career, he helped so many, as a hospital chaplain, teacher/supervisor, therapist, professional colleague, and friend.

In his spare time, Stu enjoyed reading, listening to music, and watching sports. His favorite activities included skiing, fishing, and hiking with family, as well as playing basketball, squash, and tennis in his younger years. In addition, he loved to sing and will be remembered for his beautiful harmonic voice.

Stu is preceded in death by his parents F. Arnold and Phebe S. Plummer and his wife Maxine (Glaz). He is survived by his wife Agnes Bourne; his former wife Sally; his children (with Sally) Sarah (Lisa) Davis, David, and Nancy; his stepdaughter Rachel Walaskay and step-granddaughters Kylie Squires and Sara Squires.

A private graveside service for family will be held in Fraser, CO next spring/early summer. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to a charity of your choice in his name.
