James H. Donnell Jr. ’51

James Harper Donnell Jr., 90, of Enterprise Road in Lexington, died Saturday February 2, 2019 at Rowan Medical Center in Salisbury.

Mr. Donnell was born November 5, 1928 in Davidson County to James Harper Donnell Sr. and Carrie Perryman Donnell.

He is a veteran of the United States Army and served during the Korean conflict. James was also a Mountain and Cold Weather Training Commander at Camp Carson Colorado during his enlistment. James received the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal during his service. Mr. Donnell was a member of the American Legion Post 0185, a member of the Education Foundation University of Chapel Hill and served 44 years in Public education. James received his BA Degree from The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and a MA Degree from Appalachian State University.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Magenta Rose Stone Donnell; two sisters, Caldwell Donnell and Carrie Kirkman.

James is survived by a son James Donnell III and wife Carrel of Georgia; a daughter, Candy Donnell of Lexington; 2 grandchildren, Justin W. Donnell and Sarah D. Chaney.

A graveside service will be held 11:00 am, Thursday, February 7, 2019 at Enterprise Moravian Church Cemetery with military graveside honors. Rev. Arkon Stewart will be officiating services.

The family will receive friends following the graveside service.
