William Alexander Wier, Jr. ’47

William Alexander Wier, Jr. 91, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Jean Garrison Wier entered into eternal rest Saturday, January 5, 2019.

His Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, January 9, 2019 in First (Scots) Presbyterian Church, 53 Meeting Street at 2:00 pm. Interment, Magnolia Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm in J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Downtown Chapel.

Bill was born February 27, 1927 in Charleston, South Carolina, son of William Alexander Wier and Mary (Molly) Cuttino Thornhill Wier. He graduated from the High School of Charleston in 1943 and then entered Davidson College, taking time off to serve in the US Navy at the end of World War II.

Bill then graduated from Davidson and University of Illinois, before working his entire career and retiring as a Chemical Engineer from Westvaco.

Bill was a man of great faith and member of First (Scots) Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Deacon and an Elder.

He was a member of the Carolina Yacht Club and Past President of the St. Andrew’s Society.

Bill was a family man and put others’ needs before his own.

He was an avid outdoorsman and loved being on the water boating, fishing, and shrimping. Above all, Bill was a proud Charlestonian native.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years in Mt. Pleasant; two sons, William Alexander Wier III, (Nancy) of Houston, TX and Charles Garrison Wier (Jane) of Brookhaven, GA; daughter, Elizabeth Wier Tal (Oded) of Herzliya, Israel; sister, Peggy Wier Evans of Davison, NC and nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
