Broxie Jay Nelson ’62

Broxie Jay Nelson '62Broxie Jay Nelson, 79, died Tuesday at his residence. A native of Chester, SC, he was the son of the late Jay Leo Nelson and Irene Woodle Nelson.

He was a partner with Lake and Nelson Law Firm, and was a former Raleigh City attorney and also served on the NC Court of Appeals. Mr. Nelson was a graduate of Davidson College and Wake Forest Univerity Law School.

He loved his country and also the military where he served for many years with the NC National Guard, retiring as a Colonel and commanding officer of his unit.

He was an active member of White Memorial Presbyterian Church and had an undying faith and close relationship with God.

An avid reader who loved history, he especially enjoyed reading books on the Civil War and WWII.

Surviving are his devoted wife of 11 years, Janet Sher- Nelson; daughter, Elizabeth Nelson Loyd; son John Nelson; step son, who he developed a special bond with, Mark Stephen Sher; brother, Harry “Huck” Nelson; grandson, Tyler Loyd;

A celebration of Life service will be held 3:00 pm Sunday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 831 Wake Forest Road, Raleigh. Burial will be held 11:00 am Monday at Raleigh Memorial Park with full military honors.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 1:00 – 3:00 pm prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Crohns Colitis Foundation, or The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society.
