Paul Bennett Guthery, Jr. ’51

Paul Bennett Guthery, Jr. passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 29, 2015, at Carolinas Medical Center. He was born in Charlotte on August 5, 1929 to Jane Gilmer Guthery and Paul B. Guthery. Paul graduated from Central High School in Charlotte and Davidson College.

After serving in the US Army infantry during the Korean War, Paul graduated with honors from the UNC School of Law. Paul practiced law in Charlotte, retiring as a partner with Horack Talley in 1997.

He was active in the community serving at various times as president of the Charlotte Kiwanis Club and the Mental Health Association of Mecklenburg County. Paul was active at Myers Park United Methodist Church serving on the Administrative Board and as a Sunday school teacher in the Ownbey Class.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents and his only brother Thornwell (Thorny) G. Guthery.

He is survived by his loving wife of sixty years, Nancy Allen Guthery, his son Paul B. Guthery, III, and his wife, Cindy, of Raleigh, NC, his daughter Mary Wallace, and her husband Fr. John (Eric) of Charlotte, his grandchildren Cameron Guthery and Laura Wallace, his sisters-in-law Connie Daniel Guthery and Jane Allen Smith and husband Moody, his brother-in-law Dr. Mitchell H. Allen, Jr. and wife Sarah.

A memorial service to honor Paul will be held at Myers Park United Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 2, 2016. The family will receive friends in Jubilee Hall following the service. Interment will be private. The family requests that memorials be sent to the Jubilee Plus Fund at Myers Park United Methodist Church, 1501 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC 28207.
