David Garvin Blevins ’48

David Blevins, age 90, of Hillcrest Circle, Spruce Pine went to his heavenly home on Monday, October 19, 2015 at the Brian Center in Spruce Pine.

Mr. Blevins was born in Johnson City, TN on November 7, 1924 to Daniel O. Blevins Sr. and Lillian Garvin Blevins. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Jackie English Blevins who he had married in 1948.

David was a lifelong Member of First Presbyterian Church in Spruce Pine where he was an elder and Sunday school teacher. David was a graduate of Harris High School in Spruce Pine, NC in the Class of 1941 and Davidson College, the Class of 1948. He served 18 years in elected office in the Town of Spruce Pine: six years as mayor and 12 years as Board of Alderman.

He was a member of Kiwanis Club of Spruce Pine for 56 years and has always been active in the civic life of Spruce Pine.

David served in WWII as a radio operator/Gunner on B-25 Mitchell Bomber. He flew 22 combat missions in the Mediterranean Theater, 57th Bomb Group 12th Air Force.

He was awarded the Purple Heart w/Oak Leaf Cluster, and Air Medal w/Oak Leaf Cluster, Presidential Unit Citation and Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Blevins along with his son, Oscar Sam Blevins, own and operate Blevins Oil Co. Inc. of Spruce Pine, NC.

Survivors include his four sons; Dave Blevins Jr. and Steve Blevins, both of Johnson City, Tn. and Sam Blevins and Dale Blevins both of Spruce Pine. He also leaves eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mr. Blevins will be conducted at 3:00 pm Wednesday October 21, 2015 in the First Presbyterian Church of Spruce Pine with the Rev. Bill Sweetser officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until the service hour at the church. Interment will follow in the Spruce Pine Memorial Cemetery with Military Honors.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Mitchell County Animal Shelter or the First Presbyterian Church, both of Spruce Pine, NC
