Ernest Edward Mason, Jr. ’58

Ernest Edward Mason, Jr., of Charlotte, died on August 3, 2015. Ernie was born on November 1, 1934, in Pensacola, FL, son of Judge and Mrs. Ernest Edward Mason who preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Mason; a daughter, Jane Williams Mason, a son, Ernest Edward Mason, III and wife, Blair Benton, all of Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Mason Mark Smith and wife, Stefanie of Greenville, SC, Mary Catherine Navarro and husband Jay, of Charlotte, NC, Madison Culbreth Mason and Benton Ballenger Mason of Columbia, SC; a great-granddaughter, Abigail Wright Smith; a sister, Beth Mason Duncan; nieces, Kathleen O’Neal and Margaret O’Neal of Macon, GA, and a cousin, Pam Barwick of Pensacola, FL.

Ernie grew up and went to school in Pensacola. FL. He attended the University of Florida and graduated from Davidson College where he was a member of Kappa Alpha, the Male Chorus and the Davidson Tennis Team. Though he remained proud of his Davidson alma mater, he was an avid Gator fan starting as a child following his father’s loyalty to the University of Florida.

He held sales and management positions in the textiles and craft yarn industries for over 40 years starting his career at Chemstrand Corporation in Pensacola, which later was acquired by Monsanto Company. He later joined Caron International and retired from Technical Marketing, Inc. as National Sales Manager.

He was a past president of the Craft Yarn Council. Ernie was a long-time member of Sardis Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder, a confirmation teacher to his much-loved youth and a member of the Robert Pharr Sunday School Class.

A memorial service will be held at Sardis Presbyterian Church on Thursday, August 6, at 11:00 am. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. A private interment will be at Sardis’; Columbarium prior to the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Sardis Presbyterian Church, 6100 Sardis Road, Charlotte, NC 28270. Arrangements are being entrusted to JB Tallent Funeral Service.
