Murdoch “Mac” McKelway Calhoun ’50

Murdoch “Mac” McKelway Calhoun, 88, was born on October 31, 1926, in Laurel Hill, NC, to Miriam Cowan Hargrave and Ralph Morrison Calhoun.

He attended Davidson College in NC, enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as Assistant Chaplain in Japan. Mac graduated from Erskine College in Due West, SC, and Columbia Seminary in Decatur, GA, prior to his ordination as a Presbyterian minister.

He served at Trion Presbyterian, First Presbyterian of Marietta, and John Knox Presbyterian Churches in Georgia prior to moving to Central Presbyterian Church in Oklahoma City, OK, and Timber Ridge Presbyterian in Spring and Hope Presbyterian in Austin, TX.

He continued as interim pastor for Canyon Lake Presbyterian in Canyon Lake, TX, and Church in the Pines in Laurel Hill, NC.

Mac was dedicated to his profession & family and was a friendly extrovert, disciplined scholar, avid golfer, sports enthusiast, seasoned camper, and gifted musician. He resided in Bedford, Texas for the past nine years. Mac was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Ralph and George, and two grandchildren: Casey and Caylen Jones.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Ruth Gettys Calhoun, three daughters: Elaine Vaught Stokes (Glenn) of Bedford, Christy Calhoun Miller (Scott Jones) of Springfield, MO, and Miriam “Missy” Calhoun of Oklahoma City, OK, five grandchildren: John Miller (Lauren), Tracy McKinney (James), Leslie Vaught, Matthew Stokes, and Michael Stokes, and three great-grandchildren: Katherine, Jonas, and Malcolm McKinney.

A memorial service at St. Philip Presbyterian Church, 745 W. Pipeline Rd. in Hurst, TX will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 11. No flowers, please.
