Howard P. Holshouser, Jr. ’50

Howard P. Holshouser, Jr., 89 passed away peacefully at Whittier Care Center at Friends Homes Friday, March 20, 2015. He was born November 13, 1925 to Howard and Mabel Holshouser in Blowing Rock, North Carolina. He was educated in the Blowing Rock Schools. He enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and served until 1946. He enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and served until 1946. He served in the Pacific on patrol ships protecting convoys.

After his discharge, he entered Davidson College and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree. He met Peggy and they were married August 22, 1953. Howard always enjoyed playing golf, fishing, traveling and going to the Masters Tournament . He would go to all sports events, especially Davidson basketball games.

He always loved the mountains and returned there as often as possible. He began his career with Jefferson Standard in Greensboro, NC. Later he began working for the Employment Security Commission in Statesville, Winston-Salem and Raleigh. He was the Assistant Financial Officer for the Commission when he retired after 27 years of service. He was honored as Member of the Year for the State Employees Association.

During his retirement years he and Peggy spent the winter months in Daytona Beach, Florida. Howard has belonged to the Rotary Club, the Raleigh Country Club and was the President of The Tanglewood Golf Association. He was a member of the Western Boulevard Presbyterian Church and was treasurer for the church many years. Howard was known for his easy-going personality and integrity in all that he did.

In addition to his parents he is predeceased by his sister, Mary Johnson. He is survived by his loving wife Peggy Mabe Holshouser; sons: Mark (Donna) of Advance, NC and Scott of Fuquay-Varina, NC; brother, John Holshouser (Elizabeth) of Newton, NC; grandchildren, Amanda Holshouser Faggart (Jonathan) and Andrew Holshouser (Laura) of China Grove, NC; four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 26, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in the Living Room of Friends Homes at Guilford.
