Herbert Queen Gladden ’49

Herbert Queen Gladden '49Herbert Queen Gladden born March 4, 1928 ascended to that higher plain on January 14, 2015. Mr. Gladden finished Winthrop Training School in Rock Hill and went on to graduate from Davidson College in 1949. He taught history in public school until deciding to go back to school to become a pharmacist. He then graduated from the University of South Carolina with that degree in pharmacy.

He had by then married his first wife Louise Smith and they had four daughters. After 17 years of marriage they divorced. In 1976 he met and married Patsy Foard Hawkins. He acquired another daughter and son with the marriage. Mr. Gladden retired from pharmacy at age 62. He enjoyed his Jack Russell terriers, good books and good cigars.

Mr. Gladden is survived by first wife Louise, daughters Melanie Morrison, Beth Bryant (Johnny), Joan Madison (Bill), Amy Gladden-Blankenship (James), Sonya Hawkins; son Jeff Hawkins; wife Patsy; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother Maude Queen Gladden; father William Henry Gladden; brother Bill Gladden; sister Maude Nims; son-in-law Randy Morrison and grandson David Morrison.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2015, at 2:00PM in the chapel of Hankins &; Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Blvd., Charlotte. The family will receive friends following the service.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity or Hospice &; Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 East 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204.
