Thornwell “Thorny” Jacobs Frick ’55

Dr. Thornwell Jacobs Frick “Thorny” died Saturday, November 8, 2014, after a long illness. Born July 7, 1933, in Spartanburg, SC, he was the son of the late Viola Kimble Frick and Roy Kinard Frick.

 

Thorny graduated from Davidson College and University of Maryland Dental School in Baltimore, MD.

 

Music was a very important part of Thorny’s life; he sang in the Davidson Men’s Chorale and several choral groups in North and South Carolina and was a devoted member of the Episcopal Church of the Advent choir for 40 years. Thorny was honored as a lifetime member of the Sunrise Civitan Club and Spartanburg Philharmonic Music Club.

 

Thorny practiced dentistry in Spartanburg for 20 years, retiring due to health issues.

 

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Dorothy “Dotty” Frick; three children, Gary Thornwell Frick (Gaye) of Charlotte, NC, Darryl Conrad Frick (Shannon) of Columbia, SC, Laura June McDuffie (Sherwood) of Atlanta, GA; seven grandchildren, Kathleen and Gary Frick II of Charlotte, Lindsay, Emily, Will, and Andrew Frick of Columbia, and Victoria McDuffie of Atlanta. He was pre-deceased by a brother, Roy Kimble Frick.

 

A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Thursday, November 13, 2014, at The Episcopal Church of the Advent, by the Rev. J. Edward Morris and the Rev. Stephen Y. McGehee. Visitation will follow the service.
