Elmer Culbertson Hulen ’40

Elmer C. Hulen, 95, of Davidson, NC died Tuesday, September 30, 2014, at The Pines at Davidson. Born February 15, 1919 in Horse Cave, Kentucky he was the son of the late Elmer C. Hulen and Natalie Edwards Hulen. Mr. Hulen was a graduate of Davidson College (1940), Harvard Business School and George Washington School of Law. He was WWII US Army veteran having served his country for five years and retired as LT Colonel in the US Army Reserves.

 

He joined the US Foreign Service in 1947 serving in Saudi Arabia, South Korea (two tours), Canada, Greece, Pakistan and the Philippines. Upon his return in 1976 he received his J.D. from George Washington School of Law. After 30 years of service he retired from the State Department as a Foreign Service Officer.

 

A memorial service will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Friday October 3, 2014 at St. Albans Episcopal Church in Davidson, NC. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Mary Fulcher Hulen; daughters, Natalie Diana of Charlotte, Sarah Hulen of IN, Anne Hulen and husband, Mike Kuster of MD and five grandchildren.
