Mary Louise Moffett “Meesie” Hutcheson ’38

Mary Louise Moffett “Meesie” Hutcheson, 96, of Roanoke, VA, died June 19, 2014, at her home surrounded by her family.

Meesie was born May 2, 1918, in Charles Town, West Virginia, daughter of the late Harry and Alice Gammon Moffett. She was a devoted wife and mother and was a faithful servant in ministries at her church. She grew up in Davidson, NC, where her father was the Minister at the Davidson Presbyterian Church. Meesie attended Davidson College for two years and then graduated from Converse College in 1938. She moved to Charlottesville, VA, in 1944 where she worked for Dr. Jordan, Dean of The School of Medicine at the University of Virginia. While working in the Dean’s office she met her late husband of 56 years, Robert Steele Hutcheson, Jr., MD.

Meesie is predeceased by her three brothers and two sisters and a grandchild Elizabeth Brafford.

She is survived by six children and their spouses, sixteen grandchildren, and three great grandchildren: Molly Hutcheson Priddy, her husband Vernon (Richmond, VA) and their two children Moffett and Sam; Frances Hutcheson Garrard, her husband Bill (Hickory, NC) and their three children Sarah Elizabeth Grimm, her husband Matt and their daughters Hannah and Clara, Will, his wife Christina, and Leah; Elizabeth Hutcheson Marth, her husband Herbert (Richmond, VA) and their two children Hunter and Stuart; Robert S. Hutcheson III, his wife Cindy (Knoxville, TN) and their two children Katie Hutcheson Larsen, her husband Johan and their daughters Silvia and Ingrid and Beth Hutcheson Slatery, her husband Harrison; J. Randolph Hutcheson, his wife Rossie (Richmond, VA) and their three children Jack, Beirne and Mary Ross; Alice Hutcheson Brafford, her husband Bill (Charlotte, NC) and their four children Randy, Robert, Emily, and Thomas.

Special thanks to family friend and care giver Elaine Cooper who lovingly cared for both Meesie and Bob in their later years and to Jennifer Oliver who also lovingly cared for Meesie.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 30, 2014 at Second Presbyterian Church of Roanoke. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall following the service.
