James S. Price, Jr. ’48

Dr. James S. Price, Jr., 87, of Charlotte, passed away Sunday, March 23, 2014. A native Charlottean, he was a son to the late Sylvester and Mary Sehorn Price. Upon graduation from Central High School in 1944, he attended Davidson College before entering the Army, serving in the Pacific theater during WWII. After the war, he attended Charlotte College and continued his education at Pennsylvania College of Optometry, graduating in 1951, to practice optometry in Charlotte for 42 years.

Jim’s real passion in life was sharing his Christian faith with others. He founded, served on committees and worked in numerous Christian organizations including Hickory Grove Methodist Church. Serving for 11 years as Chairman of Conference of the Laity, many times he was called to speak in various pulpits across North Carolina. Upon retiring from his optometry practice, Dr. Price continued to serve. With his wife, Joyce, he founded Purpose Ministry, a retreat encouraging others in their Christian faith. They also enjoyed extensive travel throughout the US.

He loved fishing, boating and enjoyed crafting pieces from stained glass. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by his wife of 61 years Joyce Miller Price; daughters, Janice Blom and husband, Bob, of Gadsden, Ala. and Deborah Allen and husband, Jeff, of Raleigh, six grandsons, five great-grandchildren and sister Dorothy (Dot) Sherrill.

Funeral service will be held at 11 am, Wednesday, March 26, in the Chapel of Wilson Funeral Service, with visitation one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Sharon Memorial Park.
