Horace “Jerry” Gates Reid, Jr., 86 of 121 Dances Bay Trail, Elizabeth City, NC died Monday, February 24, 2014 at his residence.Born in Nixonton, he was the son of the late Horace Gates Reid, Sr., and Maude Stanton Reid and the husband of Etheleen Belch Reid of the home. He graduated from Weeksville High School and attended Davidson College. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, a lifelong farmer and enjoyed living on Little River. He will be greatly missed.
Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Jerri Anne Cooper and husband Gusty of King George, Va. and Virginia Kaye Poole of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, David Reid of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; a sister, Alise Irvin of Elizabeth City, NC; six grandchildren, Jeremy Cooper and wife Brandalee of Spotsylvania, VA, Zachary Cooper of Honolulu, HI, Emily Cooper of Richmond, VA, Christopher Poole of Creedmoor, NC, Douglas Poole of Newport News, VA, and Eddie Poole of Raleigh, NC. He was preceded in death by two sons, Douglas Gates Reid and an infant son; and brothers, Hythe “Pete” Reid and Walter Reid. Special thanks to caregivers and doctors, especially Gwen Davis, Anitra Turner, Lara Wilson and Dr. Tan and his staff.
A memorial service will be Thursday, February 27, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joe Casteel officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and immediately after the service at the church. At other times the family will be at the residence.
