Gordon Lee McDonald Lipscomb ’48

Gordon Lee McDonald Lipscomb, 89, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at Covenant Village surrounded by his family. Born in Winnsboro, SC, he was the son of the late Julien Lee Lipscomb and Hester Johnstone Lipscomb. A graduate of Davidson College and a longstanding member of St. Marks Episcopal Church, Mr. Lipscomb was retired from the textile industry and served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Lipscomb was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Harriette Moore Lipscomb; son-in-law, Douglas Thomas; sister, Hester Johnstone Platt; nephew, Vivian Francis Platt, III.

Mr. Lipscomb is survived by his children and spouses, Sarah and Joseph Fesperman of North Wilkesboro, Hester Lipscomb and Daniel Vaughan of Chapel Hill, and Gordon Lipscomb of Chapel Hill; grandchildren and spouses, Carrie Fesperman Redden and Kaleb Redden, Rachel Fesperman Woodruff and Alan Woodruff, Mary Fesperman and partner, Ariel Gleicher; great-grandson, Henry Lee Redden; cousin, Lillian Johnstone Howland; numerous nieces and nephews.

Family and friends of Mr. Lipscomb are invited to attend his memorial service beginning at 11 AM Monday, November 18, 2013 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. The Rev. Shawn Griffith will officiate. The family will receive friends in the Parish Fellowship Hall immediately following the service.
