Charles “Chuck” Gordon Hollister ’59

Charles “Chuck” Gordon Hollister ’59, 82, of Schuyler, formerly of Gaithersburg, Md., passed away Thursday, July 18, 2013, in David City. Funeral services were held on Monday, July 22, at Svoboda Funeral Home South Chapel with the Rev. Laura Hollister officiating.
Chuck was born Feb. 13, 1931, to Presbyterian Missionaries Dr. William and Emily (Morris) Hollister 1916 in Mokpo, Korea. He attended McCallie Prep School, graduated from Davidson College in 1959 with an bachelor’s degree in economics and received his master’s degree in journalism from American University.
Chuck served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1953-1957, based on Staten Island in New York City. He worked for IBM from 1968-1993 and continued working as a consultant for IBM for several years following his retirement. Charles was an avid sailor, a ham radio operator, avid tennis player and quite accomplished at chess. He accepted Jesus as his Savior in May of 2012.
He is survived by daughters, the Rev. Laura Hollister of Schuyler and Catherine (Mark) Merritt of New Fairfield, Conn.; a son, Bryan (Mary) Hollister of West Seattle, Wash., and “adopted” daughter Mimi (Mary) (John) Wakefield of Moultonboro, N.H. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Beth Merritt (Joel) Nosker, Matthew (Valerie) Merritt, Jason Merritt and his fiancé Cassandra Adams, and Madelyn Hollister; one great-grandchild, Lily Nosker; two brothers, Dr. Robert (Cornelia) Hollister ’50 of Franklin, Tenn., and Dr. William (Bill) Hollister ’51 of Fredericksburg, Va.; one sister, Emily (Frank) Vecella of Maryland and Florida; and eight nieces and nephews.
Chuck was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts, five cousins, and nephew David Vecella.
Memorials may be made in care of the First Presbyterian Church in Schuyler or the National Parkinson Foundation
