George Dunham Barksdale ’48

George Dunham Barksdale ’48, 84, of Waynesboro, Va., died on Oct. 31, 2012, at his residence. He was born on April 13, 1928, in Waynesboro, Va., a son of Lewis O. Barksdale and Alma Martin Barksdale. He was a graduate of Davidson. A veteran of the Korean War, he retired as a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army Reserve. He also retired as president of J.L. Barksdale Furniture Co. Barksdale was a longtime Rotarian, a member of the Waynesboro Rotary Club, and then, in 1986, a charter member of the Rotary Club of Waynesboro-East Augusta, where he became a Paul Harris Fellow. For 71 years, he was a member and officer of Waynesboro First Presbyterian Church. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia Lancaster; brother, J.L. Barksdale ’57; and stepmother, Emily Kemp Barksdale. Surviving are his wife, Betty H. Barksdale, 700 Rife Rd., Apt. 4G, Waynesboro, VA 22980-4955; daughter, Holly Bennett (Cary); son, G. David Barksdale (fiancée, Debby Masino); grandsons, Ryan Bennett (Jenn) and Shane Bennett; great-grandchildren, Hollister and Berkeley Bennett; brother Rev. John O. Barksdale (Virginia); in-laws, John Hollister, Lewis Lancaster, and Carol Barksdale; and numerous nieces and nephews.
