Arthur L. Snipes ’43

Mr. Arthur Land Snipes died peacefully at his residence on Saturday, December 10, 2011.Born August 6, 1921, he was the son of the late Elisha Lucas Snipes and May Spence Snipes.

He was married to Jane Frierson Snipes for 48 years until her death in 1997. Mr. Snipes attended the Greenville City schools, graduating from Greenville High School in 1938, McCallie School in 1939 and Furman University in 1943. Mr. Snipes graduated from midshipman’s school as an ensign in the U. S. Navy and served on the LST 247 in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. He worked for Sands & Co. for 17 years.

In 1964 he acquired Lipscomb Russell Co. and served for president for 21 years. Mr. Snipes worked for the Shriners Hospital for Children for 14 years and was a member of the Greenville Sertoma Club, The Salvation Army Board, and volunteered at United Ministries for 15 years. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and his favorite Sunday school teacher was his wife.

His sons, David and Lucas Snipes and his wife, Judie Snipes, grandson, Scott Moore and great-grandsons, Patrick and Matthew Moore, survive him. His sister, Dorothy Welborn Thomson predeceased him.
