Robert “Bob” William Powell, Jr. ’46

Robert “Bob” William Powell, Jr. ’46, 86, passed away Nov. 8, 2011, at his home in Goldsboro, N.C. Powell was born in Wayne County Feb. 12, 1925, to the late Robert William Powell, Sr. and Huldah Slaughter Powell. He was a 1948 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a bachelor’s of science degree in commerce. Powell served his country in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1945. He served on the Wayne County Board of Education for 12 years. Powell worked for TA Loving Co. for more than 43 years, and retired as a project manager. He was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church, and served as an elder and a deacon. Powell enjoyed Boy Scouting all of his life. He became an Eagle Scout as a young boy, and received the Silver Beaver Award in 1990. He was active in the Tuscarora Council, and was instrumental in planning and developing Camp Tuscarora. Over the years, Powell had been active in the Goldsboro Art Council, Rod and Gun Club, Kiwanis, Elks, and most recently, ROMEOs (Retired Old Men Eating Out). He was an avid bird watcher, as well as a member of the Audubon Society. Powell is survived by his wife of 19 years, Edna Edwards Powell, 303 Glen Oak Dr., Goldsboro, NC 27534; daughters, Louise Powell King, Leigh Powell Menditto (Brian), and Susie Powell Howell (Jerry); stepdaughters, Nora S. Bulow, Mamie S. Weatherspoon (Jeff), Edna Lee E. Dougher (John), and Valerie B. Murphy (Rob); stepson, Edward E. Spence (Bonnie); grandchildren, Matthew King (Holly) and Adam King, Anna, Spencer, and Joey Menditto, and Morgan Howell; step-grandchildren, Holly Osborne, Scott Spence, Janet Brock, Terry Gupton, Nicole and Christopher Camy, Kari Weatherspoon, and John, Blair, and Zachary Dougher; great-grandchildren, Brady Osborne and Mally and Beasley King; nieces, Truet McDowell Pietrafesa, Robbin Joffred, and Jodie Brill. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Hester Powell, and sister, Huldah Powell McDowell.
