Fred “Dutch” William Hengeveld, Jr. ’51

Fred “Dutch” William Hengeveld, Jr. ’51, 82, of Chapel Hill, N.C., died Nov. 7. He was born and raised in Davidson, N.C., where he attended Davidson, graduating in 1951. Hengeveld served in the Army in the Korean Conflict from 1951-53 achieving the rank of first lieutenant. He played professional baseball as a pitcher in the St. Louis Cardinals organization from 1953-58. In 1960 he moved to Chapel Hill and was in the insurance and real estate business working for various organizations and in his own business for over 40 years. He was very involved in the local scene, becoming chairman of the Board of Adjustment, chairman of the Recreation Commission, president of the Board of Realtors, and president of the Kiwanis Club. He is survived by his dear wife, Kay Proctor Hengeveld, 1515 Tallyho Tr., Chapel Hill, NC 27516; a son, F.W. “Bill” Hengeveld III (Karen); a granddaughter, Jenna; dear canine friend, Lulu; and other close family and friends. He will be greatly missed.
