Robert “Bob” W. Morton, Jr. ’48

Robert “Bob” W. Morton, Jr. ’48, of Burlington, N.C., loving husband, father, and grandfather, died on Oct. 7 from congestive heart failure at Twin Lakes Health Care. He was 83. He was born on Jan. 1, 1928, in Burlington, N.C., to R. Wayne and Roxie T. Morton. He was a graduate of Elon College and earned a teaching certificate from UNC Chapel Hill. His business career included ownership of Morton’s Store, M&M Textile, and Kay Day Morton Interiors. During the 1960s, Morton initiated a distributive education program at Eastern Alamance High School, where he taught business courses and supervised students in their work places. At Eastern, Morton especially enjoyed chaperoning senior trips to New York City. Family, church, and community were important to him. He was an active member of First Christian UCC, Edgewood UCC, and then Springwood Presbyterian. Community involvement included Jaycees, Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, and Loaves and Fishes. He enjoyed camping and boating trips with his young family and travels with his wife after the children were grown. During his retirement years, he and his wife enjoyed a mountain cottage in Sparta for 17 years. Morton is survived by his wife of 63 years, Martha “Marti” Morton, 1631 Aquinas Ct., Burlington, NC 27215-9308; his daughter, Martyvonne Nour (Sayed); his son, Rusty (Juanita Wrenn); and five grandchildren, Wally, Russell, and Sara Nour and Anna and Travis Morton. His sister, Erma Johnson, preceded him in death. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28.
