Giles Tilden Crowell ’50

Giles Tilden Crowell ’50, 84, of Lexington, N.C., died Oct. 9 at the Hinkle Hospice House in Lexington. Crowell was born Dec. 1, 1926, in Lexington to Andrew MacInnis Crowell and Alma Hedrick Crowell. He attended Davidson. Crowell was the former owner of Fairview Dry Cleaners and Tilden Nursery. He was the first president of the N.C. Nurseryman’s Association and was a N.C. real estate broker for 43 years. He enjoyed golf and was a former chairman of the PGA of America Advisory Board. He was also a former member of the Ryder Cup Committee. Crowell served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was a member of the American Legion for 62 years. He also enjoyed his time at Holden Beach and was a member of the First Evangelical and Reformed Church of Lexington. His wife, Jean Coggins Crowell, preceded him in death, as well as his parents and his siblings, Andrew “Bob” MacInnis Crowell, Jr. ’47 and Ann Crowell Mashburn. He is survived by his sons, George Andrew Crowell ’73 (Gretchen), P.O. Box 1212, Danville, VA, 24543-1212, and Giles Franklin Crowell (Pat); his daughter, Kathryn Crowell Oliver (Greg); his grandchildren, Cory Crowell (Shannon), Channing Crowell, Madalyn Crowell, Kathryn Crowell, Sam Crowell, Carrie Oliver, and Rachel Oliver; his great-grandchildren, Delos Crowell, Payton Crowell, and Collin Crowell; his nieces and nephews, Leslie Kern, Rick Mashburn, Ann Lawson, Drew Crowell, Tracey Smith, David Crowell, Kent Everhart, and Cindy Timberlake; and his dear friend, Billie Gribble.
