Robert Foyle Stokes ’48

Robert Foyle Stokes ’48, a resident of Sharon Towers in Charlotte, N.C., died Sept. 6. He was born June 7, 1925, son of the late James Archibald Stokes and Myrtle Cashwell Stokes. He is survived by brothers, James A. Stokes, Jr. (Jean) and William C. Stokes ’51 (Lydia), nieces and nephews, and many caring friends. Stokes entered Davidson, but his education was interrupted in 1943 for service in the U.S. Army. After service, he re-entered Davidson, graduating in 1948. His career of 40 years was in banking with Wachovia Bank. In his active years, he was a member of Dilworth Rotary Club and a volunteer at Crisis Assistance Ministry and at Sharon Towers, serving as board chairman in 1988. Stokes was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he taught Sunday school, was a youth advisor, and served as deacon, elder and church treasurer.
