Edward “Ed” Lee Short ’45

Edward “Ed” Lee Short, 89, of Troutman died Friday, March 25, 2011, at Gordon Hospice House.

He was born October 20, 1921, in Guilford County and was the son of the late Troy and Ethel Groome Short. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and attended Davidson College prior to his military service.

He retired after 42 years of service as plant manager for Drexel Heritage Furniture and worked with Statesville Auto Auction after retirement. He enjoyed working in his yard, his flower beds, and his vegetable garden and had a great love for sports of all kinds.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Allen; and a brother, Dick Short.

Ed is survived by his wife, Shirley Hall Short, whom he married on October 29, 1976; a daughter, Patricia “Gigi” Marion (Dan); a son, Jimmy Short, both of Mocksville; a step-daughter, Sharon Mitchell of Statesville; a step-son, Ernest Lynn Mitchell of Troutman; a sister, Margaret Atkinson of Greensboro; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, April 2, 2011, in the Westmoreland Chapel of Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home with the Rev. John C. Parks, Jr. officiating. The family will speak with friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.

Private interment will take place at the National Cemetery in Salisbury at a later date.
