Shepard Nash Dunn ’48

Shepard Nash Dunn ’48, of Southport, N.C., passed away on Feb. 19. Dunn was born and raised in Sumter. After discharge from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1946, he attended and graduated from Davidson. Next he completed his medical degree at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Upon completion of his internship and residency in ophthalmology, he began practice in Columbia. Later, he became one of the founders of Columbia Eye Clinic. He also established the Brunswick County Eye Clinic and Robeson County Eye Clinic in North Carolina before retiring from Carolina Eye Associates in Pinehurst, N.C. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Dunn, 197 Saint Brendan Ct., Southport, NC 28461; sons, William A. Dunn ’75 (Ruth), Joseph R. Dunn (Gail), and Shepard N. Dunn, Jr. (Elizabeth); grandchildren, Kristin Hooke, Amanda Dunn, Susan Dunn, Bailey Dunn, Page Dunn, Nash Dunn, Ryan Dunn, and Caroline Dunn; sister, Alice Nash Lightsey; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ann Nash Dunn and Dr. J. Ralph Dunn 1915; and brothers, William J. Dunn and J. Ralph Dunn Jr. ’43. Dunn was an avid reader, hunter, sailor, and basketball fan. He delighted in Tex-Mex cuisine, seafood, sardines, boiled peanuts, and anything with garlic.
