John P. “Pete” Burnette, Jr. ’42

John P. “Pete” Burnette, Jr. ’42, formerly of Rocky Mount, N.C., died Jan. 9 at Springmoor Retirement Village of Raleigh, N.C. The son of the late John Paul Burnette, Sr. and the late Florida K. Burnette, he was born in Whitakers, N.C., on Dec. 25, 1920. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Walter Scott Burnette. Burnette attended Davidson and UNC Chapel Hill, where he graduated with a degree in pharmacy in 1943. He practiced pharmacy for over 40 years, most prominently known for his 30 plus years as the owner of Sunset Pharmacy in Rocky Mount. Following his retirement, he enjoyed traveling, golfing, fishing, and gardening. Burnette is survived by his wife of 65 years, Edna Singletary Burnette, 1236 Hammond St., Rocky Mount, NC 27803-1912; his sons, John P. Burnette III (Pamela) and G. Andrew Burnette (Diane); three grandchildren, Christopher Brian Burnette, Elizabeth Blair Burnette, and Thomas Andrew Burnette; two great-grandsons, Casey and Kevin Burnette; and cousins, Coefield and Sally Knight. He will be greatly missed by all his family and will be remembered for his kind, gentle nature and keen sense of humor.
