James R. Whitehurst ’46

James Renard Whitehurst, of Wilmington, died Saturday, February 9, 2008 at Cape Fear Hospital Although Jim was born in Greensboro, NC he only lived there a short time and considered himself a native of Charlotte. He went to Central High School and then to Davidson College on a French horn scholarship. The draft was in motion, so Jim decided to join the US Navy and became a pilot. After his enlistment was completed he received an honorable discharge as Lieutenant, J.G. Jim resumed his quest for an education by attending NC State University and received his degree in Textile engineering. He started out working for Belk in Charlotte as a stockboy and worked his way up to store manager during his 28 years there. After his retirement from Belk, he went to work for a friend, John Godfrey, selling boats and had good times over the next ten years at the Boat & Motor Center in Charlotte. Jim follows his beloved wife of 60 years, Carolyn, who passed away in December of 2006. Jim is survived by four loving daughters and their families who will miss him very much; Debbie and husband John Brady, Shay and husband Tim Perryman, Beckie and husband David Dean, and Susan and husband Frank Burchfield. Jim is also survived by nine grandchildren, five great grandchildren, a brother Terry and wife Nancy, and a sister Brenda and husband Warren Rollins. Jim was a member of Wrightsville Beach Baptist Church where a memorial service will be held at 2 PM, Saturday, February 16, 2008. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Baptist Children’s Homes of NC, Attn: Sam Barefoot, PO Box 338, Thomasville, NC 27361.
