William G. Bowie ’56

William G. “Bill” Bowie Jr., 70, of Abbeville, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at a local assisted living home.

He was born in Abbeville to Margaret Flynn Bowie and the late William G. Bowie Sr. He attended Davidson and Erskine colleges and graduated from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, N.J. An accomplished pianist and organist, he served as director of music, choir director and organist for churches in Milledgeville, Ga., Atlanta, Ga., Greenwood, Anderson, Lowndesville and Abbeville. Bill taught music for many years, and was owner of Opera House Studies in Abbeville and Greenwood.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by a brother, George Flynn Bowie, and his wife, Anne; a nephew, Flynn Bowie Jr., and his wife, Katherine, and children, Elizabeth and Flynn Bowie III; a niece, Amelia Bowie Hewitt, and her husband, Rick, and son, Rick Hewitt III; and a nephew Jim Bowie, all of Columbia; he is also survived by his aunt, Nelle Flynn Nickles, of Abbeville.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today, Sept. 24, 2004, in the Harris Funeral Home chapel. Interment will follow at Long Cane Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of Mr. Bowie to the Burt-Stark Mansion, P.O. Box 164 Abbeville, SC 29620.
