William Montgomery Witherspoon ’41

Mr. Witherspoon died Sunday, November 9, 2003, at his home.

Services were held at the graveside on Tuesday, November 11, at Westside Cemetery in Lancaster, SC. Mr. Witherspoon was born in Lancaster, SC, April 22, 1920, to Lucy Mayfield Montgomery and Judson Hasseltine Witherspoon . He was the grandson of Judge William James Montgomery and Lucy Mayfield Richmond of Concord, NC, and Dr. James Hervey Witherspoon and Emma Hasseltine of Lancaster, SC.

Mr. Witherspoon was educated in the Greensboro, North Carolina Schools, The University of South Carolina, and The University of Virginia Business School. He resided in Spartanburg following his retirement as head of the cotton department of Springs Industries in Lancaster. He was active in the Lancaster Society of Historic Preservation and while in Spartanburg, he was very active in Mobile Meals.

Mr. Witherspoon is survived by his daughter, Lucy Witherspoon Higginbotham of Memphis, TN; his son, James Milburn Isaacs of Richmond, VA; his sister, Lucy Mayfield Witherspoon of Charlotte, NC; two nephews, James Hervey Witherspoon and Joseph Fulton Witherspoon of Greensboro, NC; and two granddaughters, Katherine Thomas Higginbotham and Lucy Mayfield Higginbotham, of Memphis, TN. Also, a very good friend, Charles Shaw, of Spartanburg, SC.
