Austin K. Letson, Jr. ’65

Austin K. Letson, Jr. , husband of Lynn Gregory Letson, died August 27, 2003 in Charleston, SC. Friends and relatives are invited to attend The Requiem Tuesday, September 2, 2003 at eleven o’clock in St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. A visitation will be held Monday in the Church between five and seven o’clock. Mr. Letson was born June 28, 1943 in Atlanta, GA, the son of Austin Kellett Letson, Sr. and Sue Simpson Letson. He was a graduate of Davidson College. He served in Vietnam as Captain in the US Army Medical Service Corps from 1968-1970. He retired from the Army Reserve in 2000 as a Lt. Colonel. He served as President and CEO of Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center from 1972-1985. He served as Vice President of Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham. He served two years in the State Department and at the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. He served from 1985-1990 as President and CEO of Roper Hospital in Charleston, SC. In 1991, he became President and CEO of the Carolinas Hospital network and regional facilities based in Charlotte, NC. He served as interim CEO of Norton Health Care System based in Louisville, KY, and, in 2000, was named CEO of the Aga Khan Health Services East Africa, with hospitals in Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya. He is survived by his wife, Lynn Gregory Letson of Birmingham; three children, Austin Kellett Letson, III of Asheville, NC, Jackson Goodwin Smith of Charleston, SC, and Carter Smith Bond of Anchorage, Alaska; and two grandchildren, Austin Letson, IV and Leila Bond.
