Walter Thomas Long ’49

Walter Thomas Long, 73, of Athens died Monday at a Birmingham hospital.

The funeral was today at 2 p.m. at McConnell Funeral Home with Bob Waldron officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Cemetery.

Mr. Long was an Army veteran of World War II, a retired farmer and a member of the Eastside Church of Christ.

Survivors include a sister, Shirley Miller of Athens; two nephews and a great-niece.

William Preston Turner ’38

Dr. William Preston Turner, 77, a retired physician died Thursday at a local hospital. Dr. Turner was born in Greenwood County, a son of Dr. William Preston and Virginia Klugh Turner.

He was a graduate of Greenwood High School and attended Davidson College. He attended the University of South Carolina and was a graduate of the Medical College of South Carolina.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He served on the SC Board of Medical Examiners and was medical director at Connie Maxwell Children’s Home.

He served on the Board of Directors of Blue Cross/Blue Shield Insurance Co. and was a member of Greenwood Rotary Club.
