Robert Hill Nichols ’86

Robert Hill Nichols, Jr., age 57, died of heart failure at his parent’s home in Young Harris, Georgia on Monday, June 13, 2022. He was born in Atlanta on October 10, 1964. He attended Towns County H.S. and graduated from Young Harris College in 1982, Davidson College (BS), and Washington University (PhD). He did post Doctorate studies in Astro-Physics at Cal Tech, was a lead Grant Reviewer for NASA and spent 20+ years in pre-solar meteor grain research at Washington University. For the past twelve years he was a professor at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee.

He was an accomplished tennis player having won Georgia State titles in Singles, Doubles and Father-Son.
Bobby was a kind, sensitive human being that will be dearly missed by family and friends. He is survived by his mother, Gayle, his father, Bob Sr., his brother, John and his nephews, Slayton and Sam.
In remembrance of Bobby, donations may be made to Humane Society’s Mountain Shelter, P. O. Box 1252, Blairsville, Ga 30512.

Duncan Van Scoyoc Fraser ’86

Duncan Van Scoyoc Fraser, age 50, of San Francisco, CA, died on May 18, 2014. He was born to the late David Van Fraser and Lowrie (Alexander) Fraser on October 9, 1963 in Atlanta, Ga.

Duncan attended Briarcliff High School earning the United States Presidential Scholar for academic achievement. He attended Davidson College as a Stuart Scholar earning a B.A. in Economics in 1987 and completed his education with a Harvard MBA in 1990. He moved to San Francisco, CA working in sales and management.

Duncan is survived by his sisters, Brevard Fraser and her husband, Eric Kaplan, of Omaha, NE and Elizabeth Washburn and her husband, Matthew Washburn, and their children Madeline, Luke, and Charlotte, of Atlanta, Ga.

A memorial service and interment will be held in Atlanta at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Atlanta, GA on Friday, June 6th at 3 pm.

The family requests any memorial contributions be made to the San Francisco Food Bank.

Keith Alan Helfant ’86

Keith A. Helfant, 34, died Wednesday, September 8, 1999. He was the Lower School Physical Education Teacher for the Columbus Academy, as well as their varsity assistant football, assistant basketball and assistant baseball coach. He was a graduate of the Columbus Academy, where he was a member of the 1981 State Finalist Basketball Team. He was the Baseball Captain for the 1982 State Baseball Champions. He graduated from Davidson College in Davidson, N.C.

Keith is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; a loving father to his children, Michael, Matthew, Timothy and Rebecca; a beloved son to Charles and Mimi Helfant; a beloved brother to Karen (Jim) Waldmann, Craig Helfant, Suzanne Helfant, Kurt (Holly) Helfant and Amy (Dave) Fidler; his nieces and nephews, Joshua, Justin and Megan Waldmann and Taylor, Paul and Alexis Helfant; several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He is preceded in death by his grandmother Mary “Dodie” McNally.

Family will receive friends Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Saturday from 9-10 a.m. at SCHOEDINGER NORTH CHAPEL, 5554 Karl Rd., where the funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, September 11, 1999. Fr. Robert Gonzales presiding. Interment Kingwood Memorial Park.
