Harold Padgett Johnson ’58

Harold Padgett Johnson, 94, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2025, at the Hospice Home of High Point. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, veteran, and friend, Harold will be remembered for his enduring faith, deep love of family, kind spirit, and his appreciation of nature.

Born January 30, 1931, in Albemarle, North Carolina, Harold was the son of the late John William Johnson and Miriam Padgett Johnson. He was a graduate of Admiral Farragut Academy in St. Petersburg, Florida, and Davidson College in North Carolina.

On January 22, 1954, Harold married Betty Sue Coltrane in Las Vegas, Nevada. Together, they built a beautiful life centered on love, faith, and family.

Harold proudly served his country as a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict, flying both the F-86 and F-100 aircraft. Following his service, he embarked on a distinguished career in real estate and was a founding partner of Craven Johnson Pollock, Inc., established in 1962.

He loved the outdoors, particularly hunting and fishing, and was deeply committed to community service, especially through his involvement with the Salvation Army. A man of strong faith, Harold was an active member of Wesley Memorial Methodist Church. Throughout the years, he served in many lay capacities, where he found great joy each Sunday sitting on the front pew, listening to the music and worshiping with his church family.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Betty Coltrane Johnson of the home; three children: Miriam Johnson Grubb and husband Jerry of Danville, VA, Harold Padgett Johnson, Jr. and wife Teresa of High Point, and Holly Johnson Allred and husband Tim of High Point.

Harold was a proud grandfather to Suzannah Grubb Lott and husband Andrew, Harold P. Johnson III, Elizabeth Johnson Cook and husband Wesley, Rebecca Grubb Franklin and husband Stephen, Hadley Hollingsworth Burroughs and husband Justin, and Ross Nichols Mason. He was also blessed with five great-grandchildren: James Cook, Tucker Cook, Adalyn Lott, Penelope Lott, and Naomi Franklin.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his favorite dog “Cotton”.

A memorial service to celebrate Harold’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday in the sanctuary of Wesley Memorial Methodist Church. The family will receive friends in the Asbury Room following the service.

The family wishes to thank all who have reached out with love and support.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Wesley Memorial Methodist Church, 1225 Chestnut Drive, High Point, NC 27262 or Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Drive, High Point, NC 27262.
