Laura Calhoun Dail ’77

July 15, 1955 – September 16, 2024

Laura Louise Calhoun Dail was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on July 15, 1955, the daughter of John Cochran Calhoun and Eleanor Grace McLaughlin Calhoun, both of Huntington, West Virginia.

Laura spent her early years in Charleston, West Virginia before moving with her brother Chris and parents to Bethesda, Maryland, where her father started a career as a lawyer with the Internal Revenue Service.

Laura and Edward Dail were married on August 12, 1978, at Bethesda Presbyterian Church. They moved to Richmond and soon settled in a house near Carytown and The Virginia Museum. Laura had a long career as a computer programmer/analyst until her retirement from Chesterfield County IST.

Along the way, Laura balanced her work with raising a family of three beautiful and talented children. After graduating from Richmond Public Schools, they each attended college, then married and started families of their own. The two daughters and their families live in Richmond, while the son lives with his family in Washington Grove, Maryland.

During her life, Laura nurtured a host of deep and lasting friendships. She was active in the children’s school activities as well as those of the church. She was a leader in outreach at Ginter Park Presbyterian Church, involved in programs such as RISC (an interfaith group for community action), the Virginia Interfaith Center, gun control advocacy, tutoring of public school children, support of Northside Adult Homes, and church missions in Africa.

Laura is pre-deceased by her mother and father, Eleanor and John Calhoun. She is survived by her husband Edward Dail, her brother Chris Calhoun of New York City, her daughter Heather and son-in-law Austin Cobb, son Jonathan and daughter-in-law Kristina Kough, daughter Amy and son-in-law Tyler Harris; six grandchildren: James Cobb, Eleanor Cobb, Miles Dail, Felicity Dail, Christopher Harris, Easton Harris; two foster grandchildren: Mawatta Kone (and husband Losene Bility) and Jeneba Kone (and husband Kamal Yahaya); and three great-grandchildren: Muhammad Bility, Mariam Bility, and Matou Yahaya.
