Larry Edwin Walter ’59

Larry Edwin Walter was born on February 3, 1937 in Wheeling, West Virginia to his father Dr. Robert Daniel Walter and his mother, who was a nurse, Margaret McClain Walter. The young family soon moved to Calhoun, Georgia, where his brother Lynn and baby sister Louise were born. Louise predeceased Larry, leaving brother Lynn (Linda) and brother-in-law Wilson Baxley.

Surviving are his wife of sixty years, Becky and their three children: Erik (Neeta), Jennifer Montague (Kelvin), and Laura. Larry has four grandchildren: Zoe Montague, Cameron Montague, Ivy Montague, and Elena Walter.

After graduating from Davidson College in 1959, Larry proudly and professionally served for twenty years as a Naval Intelligence Officer. He was assigned to work on the admiral’s staff aboard the USS Forrestal and the USS Kitty Hawk in the Bay of Tonkin during the Vietnam War. The family lived for three years in Germany and a year and a half in Puerto Rico during his Naval career.

After retiring from the Navy, Larry did what he had always wanted to do—drive a truck. He graduated from Tidewater Community College’s truck driving school and began his career with the big rigs. He drove for several companies in Tidewater, including Givens and Operation Blessing. His last and longest employment—almost twenty-two years—was with Penske Rentals.

Larry was an avid cyclist, riding with Becky and friends along rural roads in Chuckatuck, Pungo, and on the Dismal Swamp Canal Trail. For many years he raised money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society by participating in the MS150.

For over forty years he was an active member of Providence Presbyterian Church. Larry served as chair of the property committee, president of the Men of the Church, and as an elder.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 13, 2024 at Providence Presbyterian Church, 5497 Providence Road, Viriginia Beach, VA, (https://www.provpres.org/).
